Need to buy equipment for newly purchased 5 acres with only minor hills. Use will be 90% mowing after we get past initial landscaping, clearing and digging required on about 2 acres of the land. How do you decide when to move up from JD X series garden tractor to 'real' tractor such as 4000 series?

Well, it's when you think you can afford it. Is the tractor really required for more then mowing?

But mostly...do you want a tractor, or a lawn mower? Most of us probably don't need a tractor, but we wanted one...just needed a justification.

Remember how, when you were a kid, you played with Tonka toys in the sandbox? Well, now I've got a bigger sandbox! ....

As soon as you can afford to. You'll then wonder how you spent the previous years without a tractor. And, always get bigger instead of smaller. I seldom hear anybody wish they had a smaller tractor. I debated between a TC21 and TC25, ended up with a TC29. Very glad I did.

You will never say to yourself - I wish I had... - if you already have more than you need. And trust me, you will find more and more things to do with your machine. A couple of more bucks now will be worth the cost in the future.

hrk, my JD4100 is invaluable to me. A garden tractor could do but I couldn't work the land without the 4100 and maintain a day job. Lots of jobs used to consume hours and hours, or even days. The tractor finishes them in minutes, giving me time to spend with family or on other projects. They are pricey, but time is too. ....

Have you considered the new John Deere 2210 that seems about the right size for your property Starting at $10,200 it is a much better buy than the X500 series. 23HP liquid-cooled deisel, Twin touch two pedal hydrostatic, 4wd, PTO mid 2100;Rear540 and Rops and limited Cat 1 hitch all Standard Features. MID mowing decks avaliable in 54 and 62inch. 4ft.Rottery Cutter and a 620lb.lift capacity loader. That is joystick control. ....
